Generator Load Sizing

Generators are sized by continuous wattage output. You can size your generator by measuring the current drawn at main panel during peak conditions by using a watt meter. If you plan to run limited equipment with generator you should use the name plate wattage. List below has the average wattage for common equipment and the start up surge. The start up surge is an initial surge of power required when motors are started. When sizing loads always follow applicable codes and manufacturer's written recommendations and operating procedures.

Watts = Amps x Volts
